Method, sample and report

Choose the question before the test

You may be planning a crop, investigating uneven growth, checking acidity or reviewing fertilizer use. Tell the testing provider what you want to learn. Ask which parameters are included, which method is used, how samples should be collected and whether the report includes locally relevant interpretation.

Do not treat a phone photograph or a chatbot answer as a measured pH or nutrient result. Ask whether a reported value comes from a laboratory method, a calibrated sensor or a model estimate. Keep that distinction with the result when sharing it.

Prepare a sample with the testing provider

Ask your laboratory for its current instructions on sampling depth, number of sampling points, mixing, drying, packaging and transport. Requirements can depend on the crop, test and purpose. Keep distinct management areas identifiable instead of assuming one sample represents every part of the farm.

Record the collection date, location within the field, previous crop, recent irrigation and fertilizer applications. Ask how unusual patches should be handled. Keep the label with the sample and retain the report so future tests can be compared in context.

Read pH, NPK and units together

pH describes acidity or alkalinity; N, P and K refer to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They are not interchangeable indicators of overall soil health. The Ministry of Agriculture describes a wider Soil Health Card test scope that also includes electrical conductivity, organic carbon, sulphur and micronutrients.

Check the units, method and reference ranges printed on your report. Do not directly compare unlike methods or treat a concentration reading as a fertilizer dose. A fertilizer plan also needs the crop, area, growth stage, nutrient source and local recommendations. Ask the laboratory or agricultural adviser to explain missing units or unfamiliar categories.
