Soil pH: what the number can and cannot tell you

Soils differ in buffering capacity. NRCS therefore describes lime requirements as field-specific. A measured pH alone does not determine the material, quantity or timing of a treatment.

Ask which additional information is needed, what crop target is appropriate and how the proposed action will be checked. Record the adviser’s source and date with the recommendation.
